Today Andy and I went to Tivoli. The plan was to see Villa d'Este, a 16th century villa, and then go out to see Hadrian's Villa on the outskirts, but the Villa d'Este was so huge and interesting that we'll have to go to Hadrian's Villa another day. Villa d'Este was built by Cardinal Ippolito II, who was the son of Lucrezia Borgia. These cardinals didn't exactly go in for vows of poverty. Ippolito wanted to be Pope and didn't get the job, so he consoled himself by building this little retreat. The gardens contain 500 fountain jets, all done by gravity - no pumps. One of the fountains is a water organ, and another one plays music too. You can't take pictures inside, so the one interior pic below is from Wikipedia.
