This weekend (Oct. 13-14) we went to Santa Maria degli Angeli e dei Martiri, which was built (designed by Michaelangelo) into the ancient baths of Diocletian. A lot of the interior was re-designed later, but the basic shape is as Michaelangelo designed it.  There is an exhibit and statue of Gallileo.

Head of a statue of John the Baptist.  The statue was destroyed but they decided to keep the head.

We also walked around, and walked onto the island in the Tiber.  This bridge is the Ponte Rotto, built in the 142 BC.  It no longer goes all the way across and isn't used, but it's picturesque.

On the way home, through the old Jewish Ghetto.  This is the oldest Roman temple.

Sunday in the park (last Sunday, Oct. 7)  This is a lake in Villa Borghese.  You can rent boats there, but it's pretty small.

  1. Wow - you have so many memorable, beautiful scenes here. Curious, don't you think, that the John the Baptist statue was left with only the head? And what about that oldest Roman temple? I just love walking on, touching, seeing things so very old. Do you imagine/feel the people who once lived there?
