Today we visited the crypt at the church of Santa Maria della Consezione dei Cappuccini, where there are rooms filled with artistically arranged bones. No one knows exactly who did the art work, but it was done after the Capuchin monks brought 300 cartloads of bone when they moved to the new chuch in 1631. It's more beautiful that I expected, although of course extremely creepy too. You can't take photos in there - These are from the Capuchin's website, http://www.cappucciniviaveneto.it/cappuccini_ing.html.

Whoa. Really creepy. Who thought to do such a thing? Do people still do such things? It is beautiful though - perhaps designed to portray that disturbing confluence of life/death, beauty, decay, etc.
